You may have heard about Nanta, the famous Korean non-performance show, but have you heard about Jump? Originally named Jump, Crazy Family, it is indeed a crazy show we're dealing with here–that is, a good kind of crazy. After a highly successful stint abroad, the high-octane show is back in Korea.
Jump is an explosive mix of martial arts and candid physical comedy. Martial Arts? Comedy? The combination might seem strange at first, but despite a very basic story-line, the combination works surprisingly well where we are enthusiastically applauding for this one-of-a-kind family.
Enjoying massive success in Korea for a few years now, the show tells a story about a family who are all martial arts masters. Each one of them has his/her own little trademark: the father is an expert at handling weapons, the mother breaks wooden planks like nothing, the daughter looks like she comes straight from the Olympic gymnastics team, the uncle, although a drunkard, fights like there's no tomorrow, not to mention the daughter's suitor who goes from a shy and unassuming young man to a high-strung Bruce Lee-esque Latin lover once he takes his glasses off. An unconventional family indeed!
One night, two burglars decide to break in the family house. As loony as the family itself is, this unavoidable showdown will go down in history as the most havoc ever created on stage! Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and even The Matrix all mingle together in this frenzied mano a mano where the actors’ physical prowess is matched only by the silliness of situations. The background music fits in nicely with the dynamism of the show and the over the top sound effects, reminiscent of a cheap kung-fu flick from the 70s, heightening the comical effect.
With its broad humour and very little dialogue, the show is sure to appeal to a wide audience. Jump is a refreshing, funny, innovative and action-packed show that will give you the itch to get out of your seat and... jump!
“Jump” is becoming a cultural brand
“Jump” was originally staged under the title “Crazy Family” at the National Theater of Korea in 2002. After some modification and with additional material, the show adopted its present name of “Jump” in 2003 and has sold out every day since its first performance, and took the top slot at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival box office in Scotland for two years running in 2005 and 2006.
An interactive performance
“Jump” is not only fun to watch; it is also fun to take part in as actors bring international audience members on stage for a unique interactive experience.
Highlight your evening with JUMP featuring spectacular Martial Arts. This dynamic show fuses the ancient Korean fighting arts of Taekwondo with Taekyeon and other Asian martial arts. Throw in a dash of acrobatics, and you have one hell of an evening out. This show's spectacular acrobatics will not obscure some fine comic acting.
Previous martial arts shows have focused mostly on the craft, with the technique itself being the show. JUMP is non verbal performance that is the first show of its kind to blend martial arts performance with a compelling and hilarious narrative. Fantasy and fighting come together as acrobatics and martial arts combine in a dazzling and jaw dropping performance usually seen just on movie screens.
Set in an average Korean home, JUMP is centered around a typical, but dramatically agile, Korean family - from the authoritarian grandfather, drunken uncle and Taekwondo chopping mother to the awkward girlfriend's suitor. Each member is a martial arts expert, possessing a championship level of Taekwondo and gymnastic skills. They enjoy nothing more than challenging each other to martial arts showdowns, displaying their awe-inspiring expertise. The plot thickens when two burglars break into the family home in the middle of the night - one a sleek, mean villain, the other a plump, bumbling idiot - complete with rather scary hair! When the family discovers the intruders, a mighty battle ensues. What follows is an incredible display of acrobatic and martial arts skills, with a healthy dose of slapstick humor.
Highlights
- The brand-new interpretation of Korean classical rhythm, Jump: Experience the nonverbal performance with your body
- Jump is the performance for you who worry about making a bad choice.
- Jump will fascinate you with a lively performance
- Jump!: based on the Korean traditional martial arts taekwondo and taekkyeon
