A day at Mt. Seorak(Mt Sorak) where there is the most majestic beauty in the mountains of Taebaek, located on the spine of Korea.
It takes about 3 hours to get to Gangwondo from Seoul. You will travel through numerous tunnels, but it is the backwoods hills of the towns that needed to be crossed over and traveled through. The road conditions are still in the same state as they were 10 years ago. It was also the last place that culture or resources can reach because of its geographical features, being blocked by the Taebaek Mountains. However is has long been beloved as the best resort and tourist site. Anyone would drive 4-5 hours to go visit this place.
Mt. Seorak is the third highest mountain that is 1,708 meters above sea level, which is located through Sokcho-si Gangwondo, yangyang-gun, Inje-gun, and Goseong-gun. It is named ‘Seorak (means ‘a high mountain covered in snow’)’ because snow starts to fall down during Chuseok (Korean thanksgiving holidays) and melts in summer.
UNESCO designates it as the 171st national monument in 1965, the national park in 1970, and the biosphere reserve zone in 1982. The mountain is the museum of Korean ecosystem itself, also the place where the ecosystem is well reserved in Korea.
The mountain is categorized as the inner side, the outer side, and the southern part of Seorak. The northwestern part with Daecheongbong peak belongs to Inje-gun, which is the inner side. The eastern part where it is close to the seaside which belongs to Sokcho-si is the outer side, and the southern part is in Yangyang. The inner part is famous for its magnificent view with valleys and shapes, and the outer part is more familiar to people who climb for the cliff and falls.
Sokcho, a big port city where Mt. Seocho is located, is 105.3 square kilometers with 83,579 residents (December 2012). It didn't receive much attention historically but it is fulfilling its role as a place for tourists to visit on their way to Seorak. Cheongchoho and Yeongnangho lakes are two of the best natural lakes which are familiar as ports connecting the city to rivers and ocean.
Daepo Port where the gate to enter Sokcho city from the south is located in the clean seaside near Mt. Seorak. It became a trading center for high-priced fish.
It is spotlighted as a tourist sight more than a fishing port nowadays because it is located in the middle of the harmony of Mt. Seorak, the East Sea, Cheongchoho and Yeongnangho lakes. Tourists who love fresh fish visit the port looking for good, fresh fish such as flatfish, halibut, or buri.
The great Buddhist master, Yisang, who received a massage from the Buddhist goddess of mercy in 671 founded Naksansa Temple. He heard the goddess was staying in a cave on the seaside and visited the place to meet her. He received the cintamani, the crystal Buddhist rosary, and built the temple to enshrine those.
The temple is beloved by everyone for its magnificent view hugging the East Sea and for the thousand-year-old temple being holy ground for the Buddhist goddess of mercy.
The Sunset which is one of the eight sights of Naksan is the most famous for beauty of Naksansa Temple.
The Sunset which is one of the eight sights of Naksan is the most famous for beauty of Naksansa Temple. It is the celebrated beach of Eastern Korea, which opened in 1968 with clean white sand, a shallow water level, various amenities, forests of pine trees, and nearby historic sites.

It is filled with the fresh air of a port village, and it is a place where many people pray for their wishes in the New Year festival every year. You can purchase fresh fish for a very low price and can also enjoy a short cruise.
Seorak, which literally translated means “snow-covered peaks,” refers to this mountain region as well as to the national park in which these mountains are found. Mt. Seorak is Korea's second-largest national park, and it contains Daecheongbong, Korea's third-highest peak.
Time and the elements have carved the local gray granite into magnificent spires and crags which rise from the crashing sea coast and soar upward from the deep valleys, at the bottom of which are emerald pools and sparkling streams of crystal-clear water.
These lush valleys are densely covered with pine and hardwood trees, and are home to over 800 varieties of plants and about 500 kinds of animals. In 1982, UNESCO designated that this area be preserved for its unique botanical features.
The 2,100 meter mountain fortress on the mountain in Seorakdong's small park is the Gwongeumseong fortress. The exact year of construction is not known, but the Kwon and Kim families climbed the mountain in hurry to escape, but it was almost impossible to fight against the enemies. So Kwon came down the mountain to bring rocks and stones and Kim built the fortress. It's named derives from both men. You can see the magnificent view of the outer side of Seorak and the endless horizon of the east sea.
You have to climb more than a hour but also there is a cable car which was installed in 1970. You can get to Bonghwadae (Beacon fire station) after 15 minutes of walking. Bonghwadae will show you the scene of the outer part of Seorak, majestic Ulsanbawi rock, Sokcho city, and the east sea, which is as blue as a sapphire. Also you can see the different scenes of Seorak in each season, any day of the year.
The temple has a history dating back to the 7th century. Sinhung Temple is the main temple of the area known as outer Mt. Seorak, or the eastern side of the National Park.
The temple was first named Hyangsong Temple and built on another nearby site in 652 A.D. by Master Jajang-yulsa. In 1645, the temple was burnt to the ground.
The last three remaining monks had a vision in which they were ordained to rebuild the temple behind the original site, where it stands now, giving the temple protection against the three main disasters of fire, water and wind.
After that, the temple got its current name Sinhung Temple, meaning "Divinely Inspired Temple." Subsequent reconstructions have occurred in various parts of the present site over time.
There are plenty of old buildings and stone works remaining in this historic temple, and the stone tower is one of old stone works that is made in the style of architecture of the unified Silla era in the 9th century as a classic stone tower with three-floor cores.
Another famous thing in the temple is the largest bronze statue of Buddha in Korea. This Buddha Shakyamuni which is on a 2.3 meter high 13 meter diameter pedestal with a 14.6 meter high body made of 108 tons of bronze is hugging the wish of Korean reunification in its arms.
Stupas which are stone storage to keep sunims’ crystals or ashes in Sinheungsa temple is a classic group that is created in a single place with past high priests’ stupa since 1644.
The beautiful Seorak makes your long journey glamorous with its mystic environment. The scenery made from the symphony of nature on the way to Seorak from Seoul will be the rehearsal for the genuine beauty of the mountain that is waiting for you over the curtain of rough roads and hills.
It might be lunchtime when you arrive, even though you started driving early in the morning from Seoul because of its location. Wild vegetable bibimbap for lunch is a famous dish in Korea with vegetables and rice mixed together with chili paste. Wild vegetable bibimbap of Gangwondo that has fresh in season vegetables that will especially recharge your energy for the day.
For adventuring the Seorak Mountain, you will climb to Gwongeumseong fortress by cable car. The view of Sokcho and the east sea on Gwongeumseong fortress where it was constructed by the Kwon and Kim families to avoid invasion by foreign countries in a single day gives you refreshment that you cannot explain only with words. Most of all, the magnificent scenery of mountaintop and the Seorak ridge will be the best memory you have of Korea.
Sinheungsa temple is waiting next to Gwongeumseong fortress. The temple is 1400 years old and it was built during Shilla time, one of the oldest kingdoms. Many part of the temple were burnt during the Japanese invasion in 1592, but it is restored and is still standing today. The colossal statue of Buddha, which was built for prayer and to grant the wish of Korea and the reunification statue, will catch our eyes.
